A 49-year-old American artist Jen Maestre, made some strange species sculptures with hundreds of coloured pencils, which have been cut into one-inch sections and drills a hole in each one to create beads.

She then sharpens the ends and sews them all together using a peyote stitch. “Sometimes one sculpture will inspire the next, or maybe I’ll make a mistake, and that will send me off in a new direction”.

Jen started experimenting with different materials to make urchin forms. “I found that nails, pushed through window screen worked well, and I could use many different types and textures and colours of nails”.

The colourful pieces range between 21 and five inches high and have been a big hit with customers who enjoy textural art.

Here are part of her pencils sculptures.
